Creating the perfect Home Gym

Exercise is high priority on most New Year’s resolutions lists, but over the last decade people have turned more to home fitness because exercising in gyms may come with added frustrations. Travel to and from the gym, waiting on a piece of equipment, membership fees, shared shower facilities, music choice, organising childcare.

Having access to your online or in-person personal trainer in your very own bespoke gym, in the comfort of your own home will crush any excuses you could possibly think of for not working out!

A combination of the above may be why the global home fitness equipment market size is expected to grow from $15.13 billion in 2022 to $16.55 billion in 2023 (CAGR) of 9.3%.

And despite the Russia-Ukraine war preventing economic recovery post covid-19 pandemic, It is expected to grow to $24.28 billion in 2027 at a CAGR of 10.1%. (https://www.thebusinessresearchcompany.com/report/home-fitness-equipment-global-market-report )

Over the last three years, we have seen an increase in remodelling requests, especially garages and garden rooms! Existing home fitness spaces were not designed to meet the needs of a family working and learning from home.

Obviously, the type of workout you do and fitness you want to obtain will dictate the type of equipment you wish to purchase. The size of your designated space will also play a huge part too, if you’re lucky enough to have a two-car garage then you have the perfect space to create an amazing gym at home for you and up to 3 people to train at once. Great for motivation! Alternatively you could split the area into two useable spaces, with clever bespoke storage design.

To create a functional gym space in your home, you'll need to consider the following:

Location
Those heart-pumping tunes, online coach instructions or just the vibrations from a treadmill can be a problem for the home’s other residents.

So garages, garden rooms or outbuildings certainly work best. Ground floor rooms, with acoustical wall treatments also work well. It’s important the walls are insulated and appropriate rubber flooring is laid, which not only looks great but is a good insulator, absorbing sound and easy to clean.

Heating and ventilation.
Garages and garden rooms can be very cold, especially during winter months, which can put you off training. Remember you want your home gym to be as inviting and motivating as possible. Therefore, make sure you have heating installed, even wall mounted electric heaters will do the job and of course ensure you have good ventilation for summer months.

Natural Light
A bright and airy fitness space is simply more motivating. If you don’t have windows in the designated room, and are reluctant to have the garage door open whilst you exercise for fear of onlookers then a sun tunnel is a great solution.

Mirrors
You might think that a garage gym with no windows is going to be depressing, but mirrors will compensate for a lack of windows by making the room appear larger. It will also reflect the light from the sun tunnel and will help perform exercises with the correct form/technique.

Storage
Storage options are essential. From Dumbbells to yoga mats – everything needs a place so that the floor can be kept clear in more often than not space poor rooms. Utilising every space is both practical and neat.

Equipment
What you will actually use?
Where will they be placed?
What type of training you enjoy?
Does it need to be bolted to the wall and/or floor?
What storage options need to be integrated into the design?

These are all important things to consider before you buy your gym equipment. You should get your gym professionally designed to make sure there is enough room to move around the space safely and with confidence..

The equipment is the last thing to go into the room, so don’t have it delivered to your home before you've created the space, and done all the necessary preparations.
